Updates from Henry County Board of Commissioners

Another Henry County park has been added to the list of those which are approved in certain cases for public sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

The ordinance allowing that activity (beer and wine only) only does so under specific conditions such as written approval from the Recreation Committee and possession of a valid alcohol license, among other things. This is for occasions when the appropriate facilities are rented for events like weddings, birthday parties, corporate events and concerts. The only approved facilities were Nash Farm Park; the arena and building at Heritage Park; and the Locust Grove Event Center.

Now the county has added Village Park, after a 6-0 vote by the Henry County Board of Commissioners at its March 5 regular meeting. County staff pointed out that since the new park in the north end of the county opened, there has been high demand for use of its pavilions and community room, including a recent request for a concert series which would include alcohol sales and consumption.

Officials noted that it is recognized as a “destination park” with potential for growth in its activities and to be an economic draw and engine because of its size, location and offerings. It was noted that events there would be subject to the same conditions for special event approval as other sites.

Also on the northern end of the county, the board approved the installation, maintenance and energy cost for lighting on Anvil Block Road as part of a SPLOST road improvement project. The county will pay $922.48 per month for 120 months, for a total of $110,697.60 which will be funded from the Henry County DOT streetlight account.

In other business, the board took action on two additional SPLOST road projects. A resolution approving design services for the intersection improvements at Mill Road and Mt. Carmel Road was approved for $180,000. Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. had the top proposal out of 12 that were submitted. Utility relocation costs for the Henry County Water Authority in the amount of $112,494.61 were approved for Campground Road at Hwy. 155.

The board also approved streetlight districts for Longleaf (phase III, unit II) on Turner Church Road and Traditions at Crystal Lake (phase I) on Jonesboro Road.
