Rufus L. Stewart Park in McDonough will be the site for the upcoming Street Hoops 3-on-3 basketball tournament, set to take place on Saturday, July 13. This double-elimination tournament will feature teams across multiple grades, ranging from age divisions of 12-13, 14-15 and 16-18.

Michael Price, a Henry County Department of Transportation employee and the president of Samaritan Outreach Ministries, said he came up with the idea in the hope of beginning a program to teach the local youth.

“I wanted to start a mentoring program, so I needed a way to get contact information. I know a lot of the kids like sports. One day I was driving by and I saw a lot of the kids playing ball, so I thought it would be good to do a 3-on-3 tournament,” said Price. “So I talked to a couple of people from the church, and we just started putting it together. I’ve had a lot of great response.”

Price said his church, Shoal Creek Baptist Church in Locust Grove, is also sponsoring the event. McDonough City Council-person Rufus Stewart has also helped spread the word and promote the event. Price said the community has been a big help.

Registration is still ongoing for the tournament, and it is free for all teams to sign up. Teams are only responsible for providing the T-shirts they will play in.

Along with the tournament, the park will have a moonwalk, food and drinks for sale, and T-shirts available for purchase.

To register or find out more information, call Price at 679-758-7180, Stewart at 678-618-7754, or Shoal Creek at 770-957-6220.
