County office supports team walking for cancer

By Alex Welch
Assistant Editor

The Henry County State Court Clerk’s office raises funds every year to support one local team for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the office sells $1 raffle tickets for a basket giveaway and holds a yard sale to show support for Susan’s Soldiers, a walking team out of Locust Grove.

Elsie McCarter (bottom, second from left), a 12-year breast cancer survivor, started a walking team for the 3-Day five years ago after her daughter-in-law passed away from the disease.  Carol McQueen, deputy clerk, said her office, along with employees from all the departments housed in the Henry County Judicial Center, helped raise $550 this year. She said her office couldn’t have done it without all their support.

“We support them. Our church in Locust Grove, United Methodist Church, started supporting them four years ago. The state court ladies starting helping me put together this basket. It’s all donated, and then we sell the raffle tickets,” said McQueen.

The giveaway basket included Mark Kay products, handmade scarves and several other gift certificates and items from local stores.

Kathy Engeman and Karen Hearn will represent Susan’s Soldiers at this year’s 3-Day. The walk runs from Oct. 18 to Oct. 20 and covers approximately 60 miles throughout Atlanta.
