Genealogical Society meeting

  The Genealogical Society of Henry and Clayton Counties, Inc. cordially invites the community to their February 8 meeting to be held at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church Education Building in McDonough. All of their meetings are free and open to the public. Their guest speaker will be historian, Mr. Narayan Sengupta, and he will be speaking on “The Lafeyette Escadrille, America’s Most Famous Squadron.” Afterwards participants can adjourn to the Brown House for refreshments and fellowship.


Freedom Fund Scholarship

  The Henry County Branch of the NAACP is currently accepting applications for the 2014 Freedom Fund Scholarship Program. High school seniors who attend school and reside in Henry County are eligible to apply. The deadline for all submissions is February 1. Please email for applications and additional information.


McDonough Youth Association Softball Signups

  The McDonough Youth Association (MYA) Softball is holding the last day of signups for the spring 2014 season on February 1 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Alexander Park, located at 300 Atlanta Street in McDonough.


Henry Singers

  The Henry Singers have begun practice for their May concert with music from Broadway and movies. It isn't too late to join them, however.  Practice is every Thursday night at 7:30 in the choir room of the McDonough Presbyterian Church on McGarity Road in McDonough. No audition is necessary. If you enjoy singing for the sheer joy of it, come join the group under the direction of Marion Williams.


Free Tax Filing for Seniors

  Free tax filing is available from AARP at two county senior centers. Counselors are at Heritage Senior Center in McDonough on Mondays beginning on February 3. Appointments at Hidden Valley Senior Center in Fairview begin on Thursday, February 6.  An appointment may be made now by calling the centers. Call the Heritage center at 770-288-7001.


Genealogy Foundations Classes

  The Genealogical Societies of Henry and Clayton County will hold a series of Genealogy Foundations Classes beginning on Friday, February 7 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Brown House. The topic will be Foundations: birth, marriage and death records. On Friday, February 14 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. they will meet at the Georgia Archives, located at 5800 Jonesboro Road in Morrow. First secure your research card, then they will tour the archives. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy a lunch and learn at noon by Ken Thomas. Preregistration for the series is required, limit 12, contact The series is free with society membership ($30) best value, or daily research fee for nonmembers. Volunteer Training at Sacred Journey Hospice

  Would you like to help make a difference in the lives of people that are experiencing the last part of life’s Journey? Sign up for volunteer training at Sacred Journey Hospice today. The Little Mermaid Jr.

  Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. is playing at the HCPAC on Wednesday, February 5 and Thursday, February 6 at 7 p.m both days. Admission is $5 in advance, $7 at the door. This 60-minute musical will be performed by Locust Grove Middle School and the cast contains approximately sixty students led by Mrs. Shelia Gatlin. The Henry County Performing Arts Center is located at 37 Lemon Street in McDonough.
