John Douglas Adams

  A memorial service will be held for John Douglas Adams (Doug), age 72, Sunday, March 30 at 3 pm. at the Locust Grove Conference Center, 280 Mose Brown Avenue, Locust Grove, Georgia.  He passed away on February 16, 2014 at Sacred Journey Hospice Facility in McDonough, Georgia after an extended illness.  He donated his body to Emory University Medical Science and Research.

  He is preceded in death by parents Irving and Vada Adams and brothers Aaron and Marion Adams. 

  He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Lavena, daughter,  Stephanie,  son,  Michael, son-in-law, Jerry Gunter, daughter-in-law, Renae, five grandchildren, Drew, Ryan, Makayla and Mason Adams, Reese Gunter and two great grandchildren, Britton and Kylar Adams, brother, Bill Adams, sisters, Evelyn Scott and Carolyn Wohar, numerous nieces and nephews, his best friends, Robby Wilson and Donald Toney, and his favorite little four legged buddy, Jack. 

  He was born May 3, 1941 in Atlanta, Georgia.  An Air Force veteran, he retired from Delta Airlines as an inspector after thirty-three years of service.  He was a member of Ellenwood United Methodist Church in Ellenwood, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, P.O. Box 9031, Pittsfield, MA 01202-9031. 

 

Joanne M. Casey

  Joanne M. Casey, 58 of Locust Grove, GA and formerly of Hanover, passed away after a brief illness on February 16, 2014. Born in Boston on October 13, 1955, she was the daughter of the late Joseph P. and Dorothy (Thompson) Casey. Joanne proudly served our country in the Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant after 20 years of service. Her time in service to our country included the end of the Vietnam War through Desert Shield and Desert Storm. She was awarded many medals, some which included the Meritorious Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and Overseas Long Tour Ribbon. After retiring Joanne served as an AmeriCorps volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in Georgia. Most recently, she was employed as a Lead Generator at Home Depot. Joanne was passionate about rescuing cats, an avid eBay merchant and devoted to her home.

  Joanne is survived by her aunts Ann Hayden of Marshfield and sister Anne Casey, SC of Wellesley Hills. Sister of Anne C. Mills and her husband Shannon of Concord, NH, John J. Casey of Dorchester, and Paul F. Casey and his wife Beth Ann of Duxbury. Joanne was the doting aunt of Jenica, Alena, and Peter Casey of Duxbury. She is also survived by her step-siblings Pamela Korejwa and her husband Jack of Rockland; Elizabeth Brown of Abington; Edward Brown and his wife Deborah of Halifax; Peter Brown and his wife Gloria of Gig Harbor, WA; Leslie Collins and her husband Frank of Charleston, SC. Joanne also leaves many cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

  A funeral mass was held at St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church in Hanover on February 24th.  Burial with Military Honors in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA was held the same day.

  Donations in Joanne’s memory may be made to Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, 712 LG Griffin Rd, Locust Grove, GA 30248 for the care of unwanted and abused animals.

 

Leila Thornton Ball

  Mrs. Leila Thornton Ball, age 79 of McDonough, Georgia passed away February 17, 2014. She was born in Camilla, Georgia to the late Charlie Cox and Clara Estella Brinson Thornton. She received a Bachelor’s degree from Berry College and a Master’s in Education from Georgia State University. Mrs. Ball taught school for 45 years, the majority at B.C. Haynie Elementary School in Morrow, Georgia and was a lifetime member of the National Education Association.  She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Jackson where she taught Sunday school and played piano.  She enjoyed studying her Bible, sewing, cooking and taking care of her family. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Howard and Garrett Thornton.   

  Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Darrell Ball; children, Craig Ball of Morrow, Lynn Ball of Senoia, Keith (Teresa) Ball of League City, TX; grandchildren, Bryce and Lauren Ball; sister, Betty (Brian) Standridge of South Carolina; nieces and nephews. 

  Services were held February 20 from the Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home. Pastor Kent Martin officiated. Interment Eastlawn Memorial Park. Eleanor Maynard Cleveland

  Mrs. Eleanor Maynard Cleveland, age 87, of Locust Grove, Georgia passed away February 18, 2014.  Eleanor was born in Coweta County the daughter of the late Walter Edgar Maynard and Laura Estelle Biles Maynard. Eleanor was a member of Phillippi Baptist Church in Locust Grove. She was a school bus driver with the Henry County School System for 27 years and was the first woman bus driver.  Eleanor played semi-pro softball and basketball for the Tomboys.  She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and music.   She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Walter Cleve-land, and several siblings.

  Survivors are her children, Janice Cleveland Boyce of Locust Grove, Carol Anne Brookins (Jim) of North Carolina and Bobby Cleveland of Locust Grove; she had 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; sister, Annestel Ransom of Macon; several nieces and nephews and cousins. 

  Services were held February 21 at Phillippi Baptist Church with Rev. Joey Seabolt and Rev. Joshua McClendon officiating. Interment County Line Baptist Church Cemetery. Haisten Funeral Home, McDonough, 770-914-8833.

 

Jeffrey Dean Anderson

  Jeffrey Dean Anderson of McDonough was taken home by his heavenly Father on Tuesday, February 18 at the age of 39. He was born in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla and baptized into the family of God at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Jeff graduated from Brookwood High School, the University of Georgia and Mercer University School of Law. He spent eight years in the Army and Army National Guard. Jeff was an attorney in private practice specializing in Criminal Defense. Jeff loved his family, friends, his church, music, the study of law and the pursuit of justice.

  He is survived by his wife Amanda and their children, Chase and Keeley, his daughter Eden and son Liam; parents Linda and Andy Anderson of Conyers; sister Jennifer (Harrison) Hall and children Calloway, Ellis and Avery of Myrtle Beach.

  Services were held February 21 at Abiding Grace Lutheran Church in Covington. Pastor Jonathan Scharf officiated. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the family of Jeff Anderson at PNC Bank 210 Jonesboro Rd. McDonough, GA. 30253. Friends may sign the online register at www.wheelerfuneralhome.com.
