Joseph A. Blissit

  There are not enough words to describe the life of Dr. Joseph A. Blissit who died Saturday, July 12, 2014. An icon in Henry County, he grew up in Locust Grove, graduated from Henry County High School, University of Georgia, Medical College of Georgia, and served in the United States Army. He returned to Henry County to serve the community who raised him, taught him, and trusted him. Dr. Joe Blissit was a physician in Henry County for 43 years and was in the first U.S. class in Certified Family Practice Medicine. He was the Chairman of the Henry County Board of Health, clinician for the Henry County Health Department, and Medical Examiner for Henry County. Influential in the founding of Piedmont Henry, he was the first Chief of Staff, member of the Board of Trustees, Chairman, Interim CEO, and was instrumental in the development of the Radiation Center. He was the medical director of Star Crest Nursing Home, Medical Director of the Henry County Jail, member of the McDonough City Council, and his outstanding career in public health was honored when the Henry County health building was named the Joseph A. Blissit Health Complex. In 1998 he was named Henry County Citizen of the Year. In 2000 at the Capitol of Georgia, he was commended with a privileged resolution on the floor of the Georgia State Senate for his contributions in health care services in Henry County, and in 2008 he was honored by the Hospital Association of Georgia as a Georgia Hospital Hero, one of the top 10 healthcare providers. He served as deacon and elder of the Presbyterian Church USA, and sang tenor in the choirs of all eight churches Jan served. Dr. Joe Blissit was preceded in death by parents Annie Mae Price Blissit and Alfred Otis Blissit, siblings Mae Blissit Coan, Susie Blissit Hansard, Edward Blissit, and grandson Joseph Bunn.

  He is survived by his wife Rev. Dr. Janice L. Blissit and his brother, Jimmy Blissit. His children and grandchildren are Coralyn and Alan Bunn; Dean and Lori Blissit; Joey and Tonia Shedd; Doug and Beverly Blissit; Nancy and Tim Waters; Natalie and Jonathan Baniak; Jennie Bergen; Daniel and Jennifer Bunn; Gloria and Joel Watkins; Corrie, Allie, and Dr. Katie Blissit; Sidney and Brai Royer; Wade and Jona Armstrong; Claire and Jeff Hillhouse and parents of Wade and Claire, Debbie and Curt Armstrong; Megan and Peyton Shedd; Price, Annie, and Will Blissit; Mallory and Kyle Arnold; Michael and Jessica Baniak; and Rebecca, David, and Michael Bergen. Great grandchildren are Stephen Bunn; Knox and Charli Armstrong; and Jackson, Logan, and Scarlet Hillhouse.

  A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, July 20 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Eagle’s Landing Country Club, 100 Eagles Landing Way, Stockbridge, Georgia 30281. Charlie Hubert Shurley, Sr.

  Mr. Charlie Hubert Shurley, Sr., age 78 of Locust Grove, Georgia passed away July 11, 2014. He was born in Warrenton, Georgia to the late Cecil Shana and Emma Lou Giles Shurley. Charlie was a member of the Locust Grove First Baptist Church and Heron Bay Golf Course. He retired after 41 years with Beers Construction Company and among his projects were the Emory PE Building, Piedmont Hospital – Atlanta, Swiss Hotel – Atlanta, Mayo Clinic – Jacksonville, Auto Zone Headquarters – Memphis, Coca Cola Headquarters 10 story, Hyatt Regency, Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, Crown Pointe office building, Union Bank – Savannah and C&S Bank Headquarters. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening and riding his tractor. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Nell Giles and by siblings, Billy Shurley and Doris Massey. 

  Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Daphne Shurley; children, Pam (Jim) Toney of Locust Grove, Tina (Jeff) Brown of Stockbridge, Chip (Suzanne) Shurley of Thomaston, Mike Shurley of McDonough, Lauren (John) Spillers of Old Town, FL, Paige (Al) Acosta of Perry, Don (Cristy) NeSmith of Locust Grove; and he was PawPaw or Papa C to his 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. 

  Funeral services were held Sunday, July 13 from the Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with Pastor Craig Bowers officiating. Interment followed at Sherwood Memorial Park in Jonesboro. In lieu of flowers, contributions are asked to be made to the American Cancer Society or to Noah’s Ark Animal Rehabilitation Center in memory of Charlie.
