Carlton Renna Guyton

  Mr. Carlton Renna “Jimmy” Guyton, age 79 of McDonough, GA passed away on July 4, 2014. Carlton was born in Cassville, GA, the son of the late Ransom Stewart and Clara Inez (Starnes) Guyton. He was a graduate of Cass High School Class of 1954. After graduation he joined the US Navy “so the world could see me!” and served aboard the USS Wedderburn (destroyer) based out of San Diego. Upon returning to Georgia in 1959, he began working in Atlanta at Georgia Highway Express (later TRANSUS and Dugan), a freight line, where he continued on the rate desk and in the trailer shop  until his retirement in January, 2005 (46 years). Carlton was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Riverdale and enjoyed visiting other churches, as well as attending Gospel music “singings”. He loved friends and family, square dancing, coins, clocks, Civil War history and artifacts, WWE, playing with his cat “Dee Cee”, working with his hands, and being outdoors. He was very patriotic and always had numerous flags on display. He was a member of Lads ‘N’ Lassies square dance club, MASDA, and GSSDA; Scottish Rite (32nd degree) and Riverdale Lodge #709 (received 50 year pin in 2009); McDonough Moose Club, Henry County GOP, American Legion, NRA, and the Wedderburn Association.

  Survivors include his wife of eight years, Jan (Faber Hartel) Guyton; daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Steve Webb of Griffin, GA; stepdaughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Brett Buzzell of Simpsonville, SC;  grandchildren Robin Webb, Jackson and Peyton Buzzell, and numerous cousins.

  A memorial service was held at Central Baptist Church in Stockbridge. Reverend Tandy Mayo officiated. Interment Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. In lieu of flowers donations in his honor may be made to a veterans assistance organization such as VFW or Wounded Warriors. Messages of sympathy may be placed online at www.southcare.us

 

Ruby Clark Higginbotham

  Ruby Clark Higginbotham, age 98, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2014 in Stockbridge, GA, two days short of her 99th birthday on July 29. Mrs. Higginbotham was a loving mother and gifted educator, inspiring many generations of children including her own to excel beyond their dreams.  She was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana where she graduated from McDonogh #35 High School and subsequently received a B.A. in Education from Xavier University of New Orleans.  Mrs. Higginbotham then began an exceptional teaching career that spanned over 40 years, including 34 years with the New Orleans Public School System, most of those years at McDonogh #6 Elementary School. She completed her teaching career at Blessed Sacrament School in uptown New Orleans.   In addition to her students, she also inspired her family as a devoted wife and mother of three daughters.  She was an avid bridge player and a member of the TNT Bridge Club for over 50 years.  Mrs. Higginbotham was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Luther Higginbotham of New Orleans, LA, formerly a Tuskegee Airman in World War II.  Both were celebrated teachers in their careers.

  Those left to mourn her loss and cherish her memory are daughters, Dr. Edith Higginbotham of Henderson, Nevada, Cecelia Higginbotham of Leesville, LA,  Dr. Eve Higginbotham-Williams  and husband Dr. Frank Williams of McDonough, GA and Philadelphia, PA; cousin, Abner J. Claude, Jr. of Erwinville, LA; granddaughter, Dr. Lenora Ann Higginbotham of Baltimore, MD; and numerous friends and extended family.

  Visitation was held Tuesday, August 5 followed by Mass at St. Stephen’s Church in New Orleans. Interment at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum on Wednesday, August 6. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations should be sent in honor of Mrs. Ruby Higginbotham to either St. James Catholic Church, 1000 Decatur Road, McDonough, Georgia 30252 or St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, 1025 Napoleon Ave., New Orleans, Louisiana 70115.

Mary Smith Shilling

  Mrs. Mary Smith Shilling, age 86, of Stockbridge, GA passed away August 4, 2014.  Mrs. Shilling was born in Locust Grove, GA the daughter of the late Mae Henley Smith and Wayman Emmett Smith. Mrs. Shilling enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, shopping, and golf. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Eugene Shilling and her son, Lance Richard Speer. 

  Survivors are her children, Mike and Nancy Speer of Stockbridge and James and Kathy Speer of Lawrenceville; stepchildren, Scott, Steve, Christine and Stacey; 12 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; sister, Rebecca Thornton of Dallas, Texas; special aunt, Ann Henley of Locust Grove; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Herbert Denney

  Herbert Denney, age 73, of Stockbridge, GA died Thursday, July 17, 2014.

  Funeral Services were held Saturday, July 19 at the Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors with Rev. Lamar Prince officiating. Interment White Chapel Memorial.
