Twelve seats on various city councils and one mayoral race will be decided this fall by Henry County voters, and citizens seeking to compete for those seats will make their intentions known in two weeks.

Three at-large council seats are up in Hampton. They are currently held by Elton Brown, Henry Byrd and Ann Tarpley.

Three at-large council seats will be decided in Locust Grove and they are now being filled by Vernon Ashe, Carlos Greer and Otis Hammock. Also, Mayor Robert Price’s term ends at the end of this year and his seat will be on the ballot.

McDonough has one at-large seat up for grabs this fall along with its District 3 and District 4 seats on the council. Current council members in these positions are Benjamin Pruett, Craig Elrod and Kamali Varner.

Stockbridge has three council seats on the ballot, all of which are at-large. They are currently held by Elton Alexander, John Blount and Neat Robinson.

All of the positions to be decided in these races are for four-year terms.

Qualifying for municipal elections in all four of Henry County’s cities is set for Aug. 19-23, and it takes place in the city clerk’s office during regular business hours, either 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. or 9 a.m.-5 p.m. depending upon the location. Each office also closes one hour for lunch at a specified time.

Each race’s qualifying fee is set at 3 percent of the previous year’s salary for the position. That adds up to $252 for Hampton City Council, $252 for Locust Grove City Council, $324 for Locust Grove mayor, $360 for McDonough City Council and $360 for Stockbridge City Council.

The Times reached out via email recently to the incumbents, and only Elrod and Varner in McDonough responded to confirm that they intend to run for re-election. Alexander in Stockbridge is also running and has made his intention known on social media.

For complete information, check each city’s website or call the city clerk’s office in Hampton (770-946-4306), Locust Grove (770-957-5043), McDonough (770-957-3915) or Stockbridge (770-389-7900).
