The McDonough Woman’s Club  recently celebrated the 80th birthday of one of its members, Mary Loyd, on August 22. Loyd became a club member in 1994 and has served as treasurer since 1996. The birthday celebration brought together Loyd’s family and friends from the club, her bridge groups and her sorority.

In celebration of her birthday, Loyd asked that donations be made to the club in lieu of gifts for her. She also gave the club a new refrigerator.

The club, established in 1918, is the oldest philanthropic organization in Henry County. The club’s motto is “A Vision and a Task.” Some of the organizations that the club supports includes A Friend’s House, Haven House, the Henry County Scholastic Foundation, Henry County Cancer Services, Connecting Henry, Hands of Hope, Veterans Museum, In His Name Food Pantry, the Veterans Support Group, the Ferst Foundation, Henry County Library, and Henry County Senior Services.

In recent years, the Woman’s Club has also participated in the Warm & Toasty and Cereal Box challenges, as well as Our World at H.O.P.E. Park.

In the spring of this year, club members sold homemade ladder ribbon necklaces at the Geranium Festival. The group also sold tickets for an opportunity to win two Adirondack chairs made by Loyd’s son, and held fundraisers including a pop-up sale and a Mexican Bingo night.

The clubhouse is leased to county residents for small parties, business events or other organizations, and for health and government use. The main source of income for club is generated through leasing the building, as well as other fundraisers for the group.

Aside from expenses paid to maintain the property, all other monies go back into the community. Club members, thus far in 2019, have remodeled the clubhouse’s kitchen with new cabinets and counters which will enhance the facility for activities and leasing.

For leasing, call Mary Loyd at 770-957-5623. For more information, visit the McDonough Woman’s Club page on Facebook.
