Christmas joys and memories

I still remember how we would always cut our tree growing up in Jackson, Georgia. A kind farmer let us take one from his property one year but of course my dad had rescued him on the road when his truck broke down. Our mom decorated the mantel and then we hung our stockings for Santa to fill with an orange, some firecrackers and a candy cane. We loved visiting at the Carmichael house and seeing the massive tree and huge wreath on the front door. We delighted in opening one present while our dad make French toast in the mess kit he had brought back from World War II. We could then open the rest of our presents after we ate that delicious once a year breakfast treat.

I do love seeing a wonderful parade in McDonough and can watch it from my backyard plus I get to see the participants working hard to get their floats ready in the parking lot across the street. I loved going to Christmas plays at the Performing Arts Center next door too. I feel SO lucky to live here! I know I’ve talked about how my parents would call one of Dad’s co-workers and tell him that once again, Santa had accidentally left his presents at our house. He would come over, collect the boots, or jacket, whatever my dad had noticed he was running low on, and they’d sip some hot coffee together while we told what we’d found under the tree.

Mount Bethel has helped lots of families over the years too. They have a wonderful Christmas Eve service every year and I’m glad it’s now at four in the afternoon so I don’t have to try and drive after dark. We choir members will keep working on our special music and it’s neat that we always get a CD to listen to, and sing along with, as we drive for our shopping and doctor appointments. I love watching the Christmas tree lightings, Macy’s parade, and lots of other neat joys I can see from the comfort of my living room.

I heard another good sermon recently and our pastor mentioned that we could substitute the name of Jesus for Santa Claus as we sing Santa Claus is Coming to Town. After all, Jesus really is the reason for the season. We all enjoy the gifts, the family gatherings, awesome parades and shows that remind us of this wonderful time of the year. But I love seeing Mount Bethel’s tree decorated and now we have a wonderful little manger scene near the pulpit too. Each Sunday someone from the congregation lights an advent candle after reading what that particular candle means for this time of year.

As I’m writing this, I’m listening to O Holy Night, another favorite song of the season. Okay, it’s time for me to get out my revolving light-up tree; it’s officially the Christmas season once I hear that joyful music. I already have my little decorations that play carols sitting in the middle of our dining room table.

I am praying that we really will have peace on earth, and that is something Santa can’t provide, but God can. And He needs all of His people to join in and all love one another. We do have the same Father, the one in heaven. He knew what He was doing when He sent Jesus to be born and lead this world. It’s great that gifts are given, meals are enjoyed, songs are sung, and rituals are observed. But the greatest gift of all to this world was the birth of Jesus Christ. He really is the reason for the season! I hope He is the center of this year’s Christmas, for all.
