A local nonprofit organization is continuing its mission to help veterans with numerous services.

The Veterans Support Group, at 32 Jonesboro St., in McDonough, provides free assistance to veterans from all branches of military service, their surviving spouses and dependent children. The group also offers educational classes for veterans, as well as job-search applications, resource referrals, meals, clothing and personal hygiene supplies for homeless veterans.

The VSG’s Chief Executive Officer, Bob Van Dunk, founded the group in 2011 after having trouble filing for benefits. He said the VSG, initially a one-man operation, now offers services including: assistance with VA forms; medical records and compensation; weekly support group meetings; referrals to partner organizations; and conducting professional workshops.

“VSG believes with increased support from our community partners, we will be able to provide assistance to a majority of this population,” said Van Dunk.

The group recently held its inaugural Veterans and First Responders Tribute Dinner at the Locust Grove Recreation Center. Pat Baisden, event coordinator for the VSG, said the event was designed to educate area residents regarding local military veterans in their midst.

“It is to bring awareness to the community that there are about 17,000 veterans residing in Henry County and 18-20,000 in Clayton County,” said Baisden.
