The Henry County Recycling Center reopened on May 27, following a clean-up of the facility after seeing an overabundance of donated recyclable materials.

Prior to the clean-up, recycling bins at the facility were overflowing and materials were seen scattered on the pavement in front of the bins.

The Henry County Recycling Center closed around the middle of March due to the coronavirus and did not reopen until just recently.

“The Henry County Recycling Center closed to the public when the county offices closed to the public due to the coronavirus pandemic, around March 18 and remained closed until approximately mid-May,” said Melissa Robinson, Public Information Director for Henry County Government and the Henry County Board of Commissioners.

In light of COVID-19, their regular service had been disrupted and, as a result, the Henry County Recycling Center, upon reopening, was overwhelmed with recyclables.

“After reopening, the center was closed for a day to haul off a plethora of recycled items that were received after reopening and to clean-up the recycling center,” said Robinson. “We appreciated that citizens held their recyclables until we reopened, but we were inundated with those recyclables and needed a day to haul them away to make room for continued recycling collection.”

The Henry County Government posted a notice on Facebook once the facility had been cleaned, stating that the Recycling Center would begin accepting recyclable materials once more.

Commenters on the Facebook post shared their appreciation for a speedy clean-up, but also expressed disappointment with those that left a surplus of recyclable items on the pavement, resulting in the need to delay the Henry County Recycling Center’s opening in order to clean up the materials.

Since COVID-19 began, the Henry County Recycling Center, regularly staffed by workers completing their mandated community service hours, has been staffed solely by Henry County employees.

Following its reopening, the Henry County Recycling Center announced it would resume its normal business hours.
