  Bill “Heavy” Coan, age 69, of McDonough, Ga., passed away September 19, 2020.

Charles Robert Garbett, Jr.

  Charles “Chuck” Robert Garbett, Jr., age 69 of Hampton, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2020.

Carlton James Barnett

  Mr. Carlton James Barnett, age 86, of McDonough, Ga., passed away September 29, 2020. He was born in Avondale Estates, Georgia to the late Carl James and Clara Belle Bird Barnett. James faithfully served his country in the United States Air Force. His career included positions at Standard Oil, Hess Oil and he retired from Watkins Service Company. James was a member of the McDonough First United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Junior Jaycees. He loved photography, fishing, bowling, and being outdoors working in his yard. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Barnett and a grandson, Matthew Barnett.   

  Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Margaret Gnann Barnett; children, Jimmy (Ansley) Barnett of Augusta, Heidi (Brad) Holland of Orlando, Florida and Amy (David) Powers of McDonough; grandchildren, Patrick (Alyssa) Barnett of Kentucky, Andrew Barnett of Augusta, Lauren Holland of Florida, Kristen Holland of Florida, Ashley Powers of McDonough, and Tyler Powers of McDonough; sister, Virginia (Mahlon) Spears of Marietta; brother, Don (Sharon) Barnett of Marietta; several nieces and nephews.

  Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 3, 2020 in the Haisten Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Melwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions are asked to be made to the McDonough First United Methodist Church, 151 Macon St., McDonough, GA 30253 in memory of James. Verbie Jo Hooten

  Verbie “Jo” Hooten, age 86, of McDonough, Ga., passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2020.  Verbie Jo was born just outside of McDonough on October 17, 1933. She was a retired clerk from the McDonough Post Office, where she served the community with a warm smile and was always willing to offer a little extra help to anyone who needed it. She also operated an antique store behind the McDonough Square for many years and was well known for driving a hard bargain at area yard and estate sales. After retirement, she kept herself busy doting on those she loved, telling the best stories, working the soil of her garden, watching the birds and spoiling her cats. She also made countless pans of perfect buttermilk biscuits. Verbie Jo was preceded in death by her husband W. J. Hooten; her parents, Eunice Branon Lackey and Johnny Edward Lackey; and her brother John Edward “Bubba” Lackey.

  She is survived by her daughter Gayle Johnson; her son Mike Hooten; her grandson, Jeremy Johnson; her great grandchildren, Ruby Vaughn and Violet Johnson; and her dear friend and caregiver Penney Balmes, who brought her much comfort, joy, and laughter and many tomato sandwiches in her final months.

James Harold Thurman

  James Harold Thurman, age 91, of Stockbridge, Ga., passed away, Saturday, October 3, 2020. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia to the late William Glynn Thurman and Ellen Pearl Thurman. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Carolyn Cox, Billy Thurman, Bobby Thurman, and Sara Beth Batten.

  Mr. Thurman is survived by sisters, Marie (Bobby) Bankston and DeLane (Bobby) Gossett; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

  The family received friends Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at the funeral home. The family requests that donations be made to Bethel United Methodist Church at 245 Fairview Road, Stockbridge GA 30281. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Benton Village, Southern Grace Hospice and Nurse Pat Johnson for the compassionate care he received.
