Debra Dawn Hardy Givens

  Dawn Hardy Givens, age 57,  passed away due to natural causes on Friday, October 9, 2020, in her home in Port Charlotte, Florida. She was born in Memphis, Tenn., on February 22, 1963, to Harold and Lou nee Norman Hardy. Dawn graduated high school from McDonough Christian Academy (now Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy) in 1981, and attended Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Ga., for two years.

She married Jerry Givens on September 18, 1993, but the two divorced six years later. Dawn always loved the ocean and its beaches. She and Jerry lived on a 40’ sailboat that they sailed around Florida and the Caribbean before settling down in Del Ray, Fla. She later lived in Orlando and ultimately moved to Port Charlotte, where she lived until her death.

  She is survived by her parents; her brother, Michael David Hardy and his wife, Nancy; nephew, Michael Drew Hardy; and, niece, Xia Elyse (Sunny) Hardy.

  A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

William Ronald Morris Sr.

Janet Johnson Maddox

  Mrs. Janet Johnson Maddox, age 75, of Jackson, Ga., passed away October 23, 2020.  She was born in Atlanta, Ga., to the late Joseph Franklin Johnson, Sr. and Merle Hanes Johnson. Janet was full of life and enjoyed dancing and being around children. She was a retired pediatric nurse and entertained children as Nurse Fannie Mae Feelgood, a clown she personified to make children and adults alike laugh and have fun. She was a member of Stark United Methodist Church, where she had been very involved in church activities. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Robert Emmett Maddox and by a grandson, Chase Maddox. 

  Survivors include her sons and daughters in law, Ken (Kelly) Maddox of Griffin, Craig Maddox of Rex and Stephen (Ashley) Maddox of Locust Grove; grandchildren, Makenzie Maddox, Blaise Maddox, Hayden Maddox and Alex Maddox; great grandsons, Bradin and Bodie Maddox; siblings, Joan Canady of Douglasville, Joseph (Judy) Johnson, Jr. of Fayetteville and Jennifer (Don) Cravey of Stockbridge; numerous nieces and nephews. 

  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 10 a.m. in the Haisten Funeral Home Chapel. Betty Laverne Driggers

  Mrs. Betty Laverne Driggers, age 85, of McDonough, Ga., passed away October 24, 2020.  She was born in Bethune, S.C., to the late Modie Clifton and Alice Laura Hunter Catoe.   Betty was a faithful member of Bethany Baptist Church for 35 years, where she was the Hostess for church events. She also was the cook for Wednesday night supper and for the pre-school meetings and special events. She retired from Circle-K as a district manager and worked for Pippen’s BBQ for many years. She loved her family, grandchildren and church family and enjoyed attending church activities. She also enjoyed going on shopping adventures. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Wesley David Driggers; daughter, Kathy Diane Johnson; siblings, Dot Adkins, Wanda Hood, Preston, Thomas, Howard, Van and Mac Catoe. 

  Survivors include her daughters and sons in law, Gail (W.T.) Mahon of Middleburg, Fla., and Cindy (Dan) Hardy of McDonough; grandchildren, Tommy Mahon and Jennifer of Middleburg, Fla., Michael (Leslie) Mahon of Jacksonville, Fla., Phil (Carrie) Johnson of Griffin, Amy (Rodney) Johnson of Hampton and Katie (Joshua) Black of Jackson; 17 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; siblings, Esther (Curtis) Seale of Madison, Miss., Nell Terry of Kershaw, S.C. and Doug Catoe of Rock Hill, S.C.; brother in law, Marshall Hood of Kershaw, S.C.; sister in law, Evalina Catoe of Lancaster, S.C. Numerous nieces and nephews.

  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church.  She will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Rev. Al O’Quinn will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Contributions are asked to be made to the Bethany Baptist Church Building Fund in memory of Miss. Betty. Mary Stokes Burgess

  Mary Stokes Burgess, age 92, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2020. Mary was born in Lakeland, Ga., on May 27, 1928.  Mary was a Godly woman, who loved her family and her church family. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and also an Auburn Tigers fan. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Naomi B. Stokes and W. Proctor Stokes, sister, Catherine Patrick, and brothers Bill and Harry Stokes. 

  She is survived by her daughter, Linda Burgess Tutterow, son Jim Burgess, and daughter Joni Burgess Parker (son-in-law, Tom Parker).  She had four wonderful grandchildren, Brett Parker, Blake Parker, Meredith T. Bagwell and James Burgess. The other lights of her life were her 5 great-grandchildren, Emily, Annly, Ella, Rogenn and Mallex.

  A service will be held at McDonough Christian Church, 2000 Jonesboro Road, McDonough at on Sunday, November 1 at 3 p.m. with visitation from 1 until 3 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to McDonough Christian Church.

Jack Ripley Compton

  Jack Ripley Compton, age 77 , of Hampton, quietly departed this life on Thursday, October 22, 2020.

Carolyn Jeanette Thompson

  Carolyn Jeanette (Carter) Thompson, age 84, of McDonough, Ga., and formerly of Augusta, GA, died Friday, October 23, 2020. She was born in Leigh, S.C., to the late Norman Cecil Carter and Helen Lucille (Beard) Carter on December 1, 1935. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers Norman Cecil Carter, Jr. and Robert Neil Carter.

  Ms. Thompson is survived by her children: son Danny (Donna) Thompson of Athens, Ga., daughter Donna (Ted) McKenzie of Augusta, Ga., son Doug (Linda) Thompson of Augusta, Ga., and son Dennis (Jeanie) Thompson of Oak Ridge, Tenn., sister Shelby Cathcart of McDonough, Ga., nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church in McDonough with Dr. Gary Jarnagin and Pastor Richard Statham officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service from 1 until 2 p.m. at the church. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, October 30, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Jackson Memorial Cemetery in Jackson, S.C.
