James Alexander Garland
James Alexander Garland, age 89, of Locust Grove, Ga., passed away on August 8, 2021. James was born July 17, 1932 in Locust Grove, Ga., to the late James Henry and Katie Sue Castellaw Garland. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army and retired after 37 years with Snapper. He was a life long farmer and was a member of the Farm Bureau and the Cattleman’s Association. He was awarded his 75 year pin with the Boy Scouts in 2020. He was a member of the Locust Grove First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Cleveland Garland and by granddaughters, Amanda Ann Bohach and Angie Hodges.

Survivors include his children, Allen (Susan) Garland of Atlanta, Andy (Peggy) Garland, Tempie (Bill) Kitchens, Barry (Kathy) Collins and Cindy (Timmy) Raines all of Locust Grove; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; sister, Jean (Jesse) Sims of Forest Park; numerous nieces and nephews.

James Lynwood Pierce
On Friday, August 6, 2021, James Lynwood Pierce, age 92, spent his last day on this earth doing what he loved most, working on his family farm. On this day, he joined his wife, Martha Mae in heaven on what would have been their 71st wedding anniversary. Born May 23, 1929, Jim “Grandpa” Pierce, was the second born child of Felix and Mildred Pierce of Waverly Hall, Ga. He joined the survey crew of the Georgia DOT at the age of sixteen. At the age of 22 years, he joined the US Navy to see the world and spent 4 years in Pensacola, Fla., where he obtained his professional engineer certificate before rejoining the state DOT. At the Ga DOT for 34 years, he and his team wrote specifications on road construction that are still used to this day. After a short 6-month retirement, James spent 10 years as Director of Public Works for Dekalb County, Ga. Never one to “retire,” he spent the next 15 years as a real estate development consultant. In 1950, he married Martha Mae Patton, of Waverly Hall, and together they raised 3 children, Kathy, Valorie, and Loren. As head usher and deacon of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, he raised his family with strong faith and principles. A dedicated father, grandpa, great-grandpa, husband, and mentor, James was always true to his word and his beliefs. Those who knew him valued his wisdom on problems that seemed complex to most but became so simple through his guidance. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Mildred Pierce; sister, Lillian Johnston; daughter, Kathy Carlson; and his wife, Martha Pierce.

He is survived by his brother, Ansley (Libba) Pierce; daughter, Valorie (Frank) Ketchum; son, Loren (Jessica) Pierce; grandchildren, Pierce (MacKenzie) Carlson, Trey (Olivia) Carlson, and Landon and Adam Pierce and their mother, Machelle; great grandchildren, Davis, George, and Camaron; nephew and best friend, Larry (Betty) Johnston; Ron (Carol) Johnston as well as many other family members and friends who knew and loved him.

Rufus “Glenn” Thurman
Rufus “Glenn” Thurman, age 75, born in Copperhill, Tenn., passed away August 12, 2021 at Piedmont Henry. He attended East Fannin High School and joined the US Marines right out of high school. He did his training in Parris Island, S.C., in July with all the sand gnats. His senior trip was to a country named Vietnam. After four years, Sergeant Rufus Glenn Thurman left El Toro, California’s Marine Base to drive home to Mineral Bluff, Ga. On his release from the Marines he went to work for Delta Airlines. He worked in the hangar on rotating shifts and in numerous shops for 34 years.In 1968 he met and married the love of his life Susanne Green, they were introduced by Linda and Jackie Panter, Sue’s sister and Glenn’s school buddy. This match seemed to be made in Heaven. In 1980 they became parents to four beautiful girls, and since have been blessed with eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Trevor Snow preceded Glenn to Glory when he was only 18 months old. Glenn was a kind and gentle man who loved his family and would help anybody in need. He took it upon himself to help teach his grandchildren the way of the world with his words of wisdom, quick wit, off the wall thoughts and sayings. For over 40 years the Thurmans attended New Hope United Methodist in Locust Grove while worshipping Jesus our Lord and Savior and served on numerous committees.

He is survived by his wife Susanne Thurman, four daughters: Stacey and John (Snow), Dena and Lonnie (Yaeger), Debbie and Roy (Lewis) and Shirley and Billy (Pappas); ten grandchildren and their families, Andrew Yaeger, Doug Thurman, Taylor Yaeger, Brandon Snow, Ryan King, Megan Thurman, Alyssa Thurman, Nicholas King, Lauren Snow and Patrick Yaeger; five great-grandchildren, Shaelyn, Emerson, Gavin, Calie and Arya; sister, Mildred Bucy; sister-in-law, Linda and Jackie Panter & family.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 15, 2021 in the Haisten Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in New Hope Cemetery.
