A drunk driving crash that caused one man’s death has led to another man receiving a 15-year prison sentence.

A Henry County jury returned a guilty verdict April 28 against Andre Denson, 41, of Hampton, on charges of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, two counts of driving under the influence, and not wearing a seatbelt, according to a statement released by the District Attorney’s Office.

The report stated that Morrie Carraway, 57, had just left his Henry County house on the evening of Jan. 13, 2019 and was on his way to work when Denson’s Dodge Ram truck ran through the stop sign at Lester Mill Road and Bill Gardner Parkway in Locust Grove. Denson’s truck struck the side of Carraway’s Ford F-150, sending Carraway’s truck off to the side of the road, where it caught fire.

Emergency responders arrived to find Carraway dead, trapped inside the fiery truck. Denson was taken to the hospital, where a blood test determined he was intoxicated above the legal limit. Police issued a warrant for Denson, and he was later arrested in Michigan, where he was convicted of a second DUI.

Henry County Superior Court Judge Danielle Roberts sentenced Denson to 15 years to serve in prison, which is the maximum sentence for vehicular homicide. The case was tried by assistant district attorneys John Murray and Caitlin McGillicuddy.
