With summer vacations a staple in many Georgians’ lives, it is easy to assume that it has always been this way. Until the beginning of the 20th century, vacations were a luxury only for the affluent. This presentation starts with the unique beginnings of travel and tourism for the majority of the population and follows its evolution.

Penny Cliff has been the Education Specialist at the Georgia Archives since 2017. She earned her bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in communication from Mercer University, and her master’s degree in history with a concentration in archives from Georgia College and State University.

The Georgia Archives is a unit of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. The Georgia Archives identifies, collects, manages, preserves, provides access to, and publicizes records and information of Georgia and its people, and assists state and local government agencies with their records management.
