Lorene Marshall Lindsey
Lorene Marshall Lindsey, former Mayor of the City of Locust Grove, passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2022, at the age of 99. She was elected as the first woman Mayor in all of Henry County and served Locust Grove as Mayor for more than a decade. Soon after marrying Jake Lindsey and moving to Locust Grove, some seventy years ago, Mayor Lindsey began serving in many capacities with the Locust Grove United Methodist Church Women’s Clubs, local government, and community service including the Locust Grove City Council, Council on Aging, The Atlanta Regional Commission’s Aging Task Force, Silver Hair Legislature, and Surplus Food Distribution. Her volunteer efforts were recognized in over 100 citations and/or awards throughout her life; and most recently, in May of this year, she was included in the latest edition of Who’s Who in America representing the great state of Georgia. Mayor Lindsey’s reach was truly profound. Mayor Lindsey was born September 27, 1922. Growing up in Atlanta during the depression, she was the first in her family to graduate high school. She went on to enjoy a long and illustrious career at the U. S. Army Depot which took her many places across the globe. As a young single woman, she often modeled for Rich’s and Macy’s local fashion shows, once drove a race car at the Atlanta Lakewood Track, and was a motorcycle enthusiast. Music, dancing, entertaining close friends at her home, a round of golf, and reading were some of her interests throughout the years. Her love of travel was something she pursued to the very end. She was a loving mother to her two sons of choice, Troy and Roy Worthy, and always a beloved aunt and mentor for her niece, Tina Barron, and sister, Joan Vining. Aunt Lorene was adored as the Matriarch of a close-knit family that has grown to boast five generations and every one of them gathered for “Aunt Lorene’s Dinner” for more than 60 years on the second Sunday in December to share the holiday spirit as a family. The Easter Egg Hunts at Aunt Lorene’s also became a tradition and grew larger with each generation. Lorene Lindsey was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jake Lindsey; parents, Clifford and Willie Mae Marshall; and her sister, Christine Leonard.
She is survived by her sons, Troy and Roy Worthy; one grandson and one great-grandson; niece, Tina Leonard Barron; 12 great-nieces and -nephews; 13 great-great nieces and -nephews; and 4 great-great-great-nephews and a niece and extended Lindsey family members. She made a huge impact on the City of Locust Grove, her many friends, and her family. She will be greatly missed.
