Discussing Idioms with the Cave Man

On my last trip to interview the Cave Man, Zub (02/01/2022) we had several side discussions not included with that interview. Here is one.

CASUAL OBSERVER: “I am very curious about your language and the different ways your village communicates ideas and feelings with each other.”
ZUB: “OK, shoot. Whatever floats your boat.”
CO: “Well, for instance, I see you use idioms as part of your dialog.”
ZUB: “I can’t wrap my head around what you’re saying. Idioms are…?”
CO: “You just did it again!”
ZUB: “I don’t want to belabor the point, but I realize that I may be one brain cell short of a turnip at times, so can you start at the beginning and give me an example?”
CO: “Ok, an idiom is sort of an expression of words that communicate an idea, feeling, thought, etc. using commonly used phrases that try to get your point across by example. For instance, ‘A Stich in Time Saves Nine.”
ZUB: “Great example. No Comprendo as if I’m supposed to know what that means.”
CO: “What that means is, say you have a small tear in your tunic. If you repair it now instead of waiting until the tear gets larger, you will have saved time, energy and thread by taking care of the problem before it got worse. Fix a small problem before it becomes a big problem.”
ZUB: “OH … now I dig what you are saying. We do have do an idiom that states, ‘If a crocodile is eating your foot, club him before he eats your whole leg.’” Another is, ‘Don’t stick you hand in the fire, it hurts’.”
CO: “Yes, but aren’t those a bit obvious?”
ZUB: “Well, someone had to be the first to find out and warn others.”
CO: “I keep forgetting that you are behind the times.”
ZUB: “What you see is what you get, Future Meister. But don’t paint us all with the same brush. Different strokes for different folks, and remember don’t cry over spilt milk because tomorrow is just a day away, and fat chance of dropping the ball twice.
