Free tax return preparation with free e-filing is available to seniors and those with low income at an AARP site in McDonough from February 6 through April 10. Counselors will only be available on Mondays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. with the last appointment of the day available at 2 p.m.

Appointments are required and can be made by calling Elaine Childs at 770-778-3363 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

American Legion Post 516 is allowing the use of their facilities again this year and volunteers will be observing CDC protocols for safety.

The standard deduction is high, so there are many who do not need to file, and many who have itemized in the past will not need to do so now.

When you come for preparation, you will need the following: Your 2021 tax return; picture ID’s and Social Security numbers for self, spouse, and any dependents; W-2’s; SSA 1099’s; 1099R’s; 1099 INT’s; 1099 DIV’s; 1099G’s, 1099 NEC’s, stock reports – all sources of income. If you had insurance through the Marketplace, you should have the 1095 form.

For those who choose to itemize, bring clear documentation about medical expenses, insurance premiums, mortgage interest, property tax, donations, etc. Participants are asked to total their receipts beforehand. Standard deductions have increased, therefore deductions will have to be extremely large. For a joint return, it would have to be more than $30,000; for a single return, more than $15,000.

American Legion Post 516 is located at 122 Legion Road in McDonough.
