One of two rezoning requests before the Henry County Board of Commissioners was approved at its February 7 regular meeting.

The board gave the go-ahead to a request to allow R-2 single-family residential zoning on a 23.6-acre piece of property in the northern end of the county, to the south of Patillo Road and east of Thurman Road. It was approved with 17 conditions.

A separate request was made regarding a 7.7-acre site at 235 Springdale Road, near the corner of East Lake Parkway, for rezoning to neighborhood commercial to allow a new development. That request was tabled until mid-April.

In other business, the purchase of a trained K-9 dog, a Labrador retriever, for the Henry County Police Department was approved at a cost of $13,195.  That money will come from a federal seized funds account. Also approved was the $221,200 acquisition of 140 smartphone in-vehicle camera hardware kits with software for new HCPD vehicles, as well as $41,532 for purchase and updating of equipment for 21 vehicles being used by the department’s school resource officers in various schools.

The board voted to spend approximately $1.1 million on several items providing resources for the county’s technology services. That included $307,828 to be spent on computers, monitors, laptops and docking stations in one resolution, and another was for $217,223 that would be earmarked for network infrastructure hardware. A $578,554 allocation for hardware and technology in two specific areas in county buildings was also approved. All of the funding for these projects is coming from the capital improvement plan which was previously approved by the commissioners.

Two members of the Henry County Board of Tax Assessors saw their appointments approved at the meeting. Lloyd A.E. Smikle Sr. and William A. Thompson Jr. were each appointed to six-year terms beginning March 1.

The commissioners approved a $362,238 contract for pavement marking services and a $187,700 agreement for consulting services regarding the 2023 update to the county’s comprehensive plan. The board also approved a memorandum of agreement with the city of McDonough relating to inspections, permitting and plan review for the county aquatic center now under development.

Several action items related to ongoing transportation projects were approved. The board approved a resolution authorizing a $165,246 payment to the Henry County Water Authority for utility relocation costs affecting the Racetrack Road and Iris Lake Road intersection improvement project. The funding comes from the county’s special-purpose local option sales tax program.

Also approved were three separate right-of-way acquisitions by negotiated contract or condemnation for Bridges Road at Willow Lane intersection improvements, Rock Quarry Road widening, and Fairview Road sidewalk installation.
