The sounds of music will fill the air in Hampton this weekend, thanks to a growing tradition for the community.

Porchfest 2018 is set for Saturday from 1-9 p.m. The free event promises to deliver a wide variety of entertainment, said Hampton Main Street Director Denise McKay.

“We have 31 groups or performers that are going to be appearing,” she said, adding that the lineup will showcase everything from inspirational rap, bluegrass and country music to indie rock, jazz, and rhythm and blues. “I’m so excited about it this year. We will have up to six bands going at the same time at different porches throughout the downtown area. The porches are alive with music from 1-6 p.m., and then from 6-9 p.m., we bring it back into the downtown area.”

McKay said Porchfest, now in its third year, has enjoyed a positive reception in the Hampton community. She said approximately 1,200 people attended last year’s event, and that she expects a similar turnout this time around.

“From what I hear from residents and businesses in Hampton, this is their favorite event of the year,” she said. “It’s a good way to spend the day, visit with everybody and hear music. Music has a way of bringing people together.

“It doesn’t cost anything to listen to the music,” continued McKay. “It’s family-friendly, and people can patronize local businesses if they choose. It’s unique for this side of Atlanta and very well received.”
