Shortly after the Henry County Board of Commissioners took action on the proposed Boys and Girls Club sites forming in the county, the county’s other two local partners made it official as well.

The agreement reached earlier this year calls for the city of McDonough to provide the funding, with the Henry County Board of Education providing a club site and the BGCCG handling the operations.

The McDonough City council voted unanimously at its November 7 regular meeting to approve a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Georgia to finance the clubs at a cost of $450,000 over a three-year period. The first payment of $150,000 would be due this month, with the balance being paid out in 24 equal monthly installments beginning on or after January 1, 2021. The county commissioners approved a MOU for the same amount and terms.

The school board identified the former Henry County Middle School campus as a potential site, as it is no longer used as a school since the opening of the new McDonough Middle School. A lease agreement was submitted to the school board by the BGCCG in early October, followed by a joint meeting and a site visit to the HCMS campus.

The lease is for use of a portion of the campus that includes the gym, softball field, football field and parking lot. It received unanimous approval from the school board.

The BGCCG will rent the facilities for one dollar per year and will have access beginning January 1, 2020.
