Henry County’s police offices are mourning the loss of one of their four-legged crime fighters who died after being severely injured in an automobile accident in the line of duty.

The five-year-old Belgian Malinois was known as K-9 Thorr, according to reports, and had been serving and protecting the citizens of Henry County for the past six months.

One of the departments K-9 units was involved in a vehicle collision on I-75 the night of Jan. 9. Two officers were conducting traffic enforcement on the expressway near mile marker 208 when their vehicle collided with a tractor trailer.

Both officers were wearing seat belts and were transported to Piedmont Henry Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released. The driver of the tractor trailer was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for evaluation, and was conscious and alert while at the scene.

K-9 Thorr was transported to the veterinarian, where he was examined and ultimately determined to have suffered significant injuries and had to be put down.
