On Saturday, December 5 the Andrew McBride Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met and recognized eleven high school seniors as Good Citizen Award recipients. Their chapter strives to recognize one student from every high school in Henry County. This school year presented new challenges as some schools met in person and some schools held virtual classes.

Students are selected by the principals, senior guidance counselors, and senior teachers at each of their schools. The award is for students who demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. The chosen student has the opportunity to enter an essay contest for a monetary award presented by their chapter.

For the 2020-2021 school year, eleven high schools participated in recognizing a Good Citizen Student, and of those, nine participated in the essay contest. Here in Henry County, private schools were all in-person, while public schools were mostly virtual with some having students come into the school one or two days a week. School guidance counselors helped work out the details and logistics of proctoring the essays for those students who wished to participate in the essay portion of the award.
